Fine Finned Friends

The fish in your pond are unique, and some of them will be with you for many, many years. Give your special pets the extra-special care they deserve by understanding the signs of good health and stress. Use Jungle Fortified Pond Salts, as a dip or in addition to medications, to increase the effectiveness of disease treatments. Need help identifying a problem and finding a solution? Here’s a list of the most common:

Anchor Worms – Tiny, threadlike worms hang from body of fish

Black Spot Disease – Small, black specks appear on skin.

Clamped Fins – Clamped fins and/or thin fish may indicate the early stages of a variety of situations. Be sure to observe fish for further symptoms.

Cloudy Eyes – A white or gray film covering the eyes.

Fish Bloat (Dropsy) – Fish appear bloated with protruding scales

Fish Lice – Flat disk shapes that slowly move on skin and fins.

Flashing (itching) – Irritation on skin that causes fish to scrape against objects.

Flukes – Small red spots appear on skin and/or fins, fish scrape on objects or gills hang partially open and pump fast.

Fungus – Cottony growth on fins, mouth, tail or any part of body.

Gill Disease – Gills appear swollen and pump fast, slime may trail from gills or fish swim in a jerking motion

Grey/White Slime – Fish appear to have a gray/white film on all or part of the fish body or fish is flashing (scraping against objects).

  • Use Pond Ick Guard® for grey/white slime.

  • Pond Ick Guard® also quickly and effectively clears ick (white spot) on fish and guards against secondary infections as a result of wounds left by the ick parasite.

Ick (white spot) – White, sugar-like crystals appear on fins and/or body of fish.

Internal Parasites – Fish are lethargic, bloated without protruding scales, thin, have long pale, stringy feces.

Pop Eye – Eyes protrude from head

Red Streaks – Red blood streaks or blotches appear on fins or body

Rot (body, fin, mouth or tail) – Black patches and/or white edges appear on fins, mouth fins decay, frayed or jagged fins appear, or red sores appear on body

Swim Bladder Disease – Fish swim unbalanced and have difficulty maintaining position

Thin Fish – Belly appears sunken and fish are sluggish. This condition may be caused by fungus and/or bacteria problems in the pond.

Tumors – Unusual growths or swellings on/in any part of the body. If tumors grow on internal organs, you may notice firm, noticeable swellings to the general body shape.

  • There’s no treatment available. Tumors are not necessarily fatal, but if you’re concerned, contact your vet. Some fish live years with tumors and some tumors even disappear with time.

Ulcers – Lesions, reddening at the base of the fins and the vent, loss of appetite and darkening of coloration.

  • Use Pond Fungus Eliminator®.

  • Use Fortified Pond Salts to help prevent ulcers, 1-2 pounds per 100 gallons. For temporary use as a disease treatment (at 3.0% level): prepare a separate container as a dip, fill with water from pond and add 2.5 pounds (1135 g) of Fortified Pond Salts to 10 U.S. gallons (40 L) of water. Place fish in dip for 30 seconds to 10 minutes. Leave in dip until fish rolls over or shows any signs of stress (gasping at surface, rolling, darting, etc.) and place back into pond. If necessary, repeat after 24 hours.
