Are you really ready for the spring?
Thousands of potential
pond owners are interested in starting a new pond each
spring. And, finding a retailer who will help you do it is
half the battle.
Many stores provide their customers with
entry-level pond building kits complete with filtration systems. Some may also
be providing a complete line of spring start up chemicals and pond and bog
plants. A good retailer will have all of this inventory in stock and be ready
for his customers with information--information that shows that he cares and
understands your needs.
As you know, there are two types of spring
pond builders. The do-it-yourselfer and the hobbyist who prefers to have a pond
built for him.
For the pond building do-it-yourselfer
If you are a do-it-yourselfer, you are big
on information gathering. You love to go out and “research”. The ideal retailer
will provide that research for you. If you’re a web site researcher, you’ll be
looking for a list of great pond building web sites. Find the ones that pertain
to your area. Cold climate? Rocky terrain? Lots of predators? Whatever
conditions exist in your area that will affect your pond building—read up on it.
If you’re a book and magazine researcher,
you will appreciate a recommended book and magazine list complete with a brief
synopsis of what each contains.
For the person who prefers to have a pond
built for them.
Your preferred retailer will provide a list
of recommended builders. Ideally, he will compile photos and business cards of
various pond builders in your area in a three ring for your perusal.
For both types of pond builders.
We recommend that you join your local pond
club. They have a wealth of information for you.
Good pond stores and pond clubs have a list
of recommended plants (with color photos) that do well in your area--both sun
and shade, as well as a list of recommended fish.
And last but not least, make sure you
understand the role chemicals play in creating that “natural” look. Look for
stores that carry a complete line of chemicals specifically designed for the
start up pond at sizes that are perfect for the first time pond builder.
Well-trained associates will personally talk to their customers about ponds and
have those information sheets ready.
