Seasonal Pond

Year-round water garden beauty isn’t a mystery if you know what to do!

Seasonal Fish Tips – Just like other pets, your fish feel the effects of temperature changes. The optimal water temperature for Koi and Goldfish is 78 – 84 degrees, so higher and lower temperatures mean a little extra care.

  • SUMMER

    • Unshaded pond water can soar to 95 degrees or more. These higher temperatures mean a fully developed immune system for fish, so ulcers and fin rot will not be a problem. But parasites can increase, so watch for anchor worms, fish lice or flukes and add Jungle treatments when necessary.

    • Fish do get sunburn, so be sure your pond has shady spots available all day long and use Pond Water Shade to block UV rays.

    • Fish metabolisms speed up in the summer, meaning they require more oxygen. Check your water’s oxygen levels as temperatures rise and keep aerating devices, like fountains and waterfalls, on at all times.

    • In summer months, feed fish twice a day, in the cool morning and late evening. Reduce feeding to once a day when water temperature reaches 90 degrees; stop feeding when water reaches 95 degrees.

  • FALL/WINTER

    • As temperatures drop, fish metabolisms slow and less food is required, so decrease the amount of food you provide in cooler seasons.

    • To keep pond water from freezing completely and depleting access to critical oxygen, simply place a plastic ball on the surface to keep ice from forming a seal.
